How it's worked out

  1. Split the price into the Land Transaction Tax bands.

  2. Use the higher rates for a buy-to-let, a second home or a company.

  3. Charge each slice at its rate and add them up.

Questions

What are the higher rates?

Buy-to-lets, second homes and homes bought by companies pay higher rates on every band, from a low price. Pick who's buying to see the difference.

Is there relief for first-time buyers?

No. Wales has no first-time buyer relief, but the main rates start higher than England's, so many first homes pay nothing.

Who collects it?

The Welsh Revenue Authority. Your solicitor files the return and pays it, usually within 30 days of completion.
